Showcase of Qatar sports, culture opens in London HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee, inaugurated “Bayt Qatar” (House of Qatar) in London on Thursday night.The event was attended by members of the International Olympic Committee, Qatari athletes, members of the media and the Games stakeholders.The Qatar National Olympic Committee House (Bayt Qatar), located at 2 Savoy Place and overlooking the banks of the River Thames, will feature a host of exhibitions, programmes and events that explore and celebrate Qatari sports and culture.“Bayt Qatar brings together all that is unique to Qatar and the Arab world, from ancient Islamic art to modern Arab art and works by celebrated photographers and sculptures to ground-breaking innovations from Qatar,” said Sheikh Saoud.He added that the House would also be welcoming all Arab National Olympic Committees and athletes, inviting them to Iftar during Ramadan.Bayt Qatar will have an exhibition and stage events that cover the arts and science initiatives Qatar has pioneered in its journey towards becoming a sustainable, knowledge economy, while also celebrating the history of sport in Qatar and the Qatari team competing at London 2012.The House will also showcase the rapid economic growth of the State of Qatar, and is being supported by QNB, Qtel, Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, Mshiereb Properties, Qatar Tourism Authority and Qatar Museums Authority.The Brigitte and Marian Lacombe exhibition “Hey’Ya: Arab Women in Sport,” commissioned by Qatar Museums Authority and showing at Sotheby’s will be featured in the House, alongside a programme of films selected for screening by the Doha Film Institute.The wide array of other partners representing Qatar’s scientific development includes Qatar Science &Technology Park, Al Shaqab, Qatar Foundation, and Williams F1 Technology Center.Numerous Qatar-based sports organisations that have made a mark internationally will also have a presence in the house, such as Aspire Zone Foundation, the International Centre for Sport Security, Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee and Al Jazeera Sports, which will be broadcasting its coverage of the Olympic Games live from within the House’s Sports Lounge.
